To be honest, I am a person that absolutely loves beautiful bottles and wonderful smells, that’s how you can sell me something, but over the years I have learned how to control myself and try to look at the quality of the product and if I really need it (trust me, if I could I would probably have a separate room for different shampoos and other cosmetic products!!!). I believe if you are looking for a new shampoo you need to think WHY you need it, are there any problems you have with your scalp or with your hair? Dandruff, oily, unhealthy scalp, or weak hair?
I personally suffer from dandruff, but since my early teens, I learned how to control that. Trust me, I have tried A LOT of shampoos, from cheap to expensive, from completely lab-based to completely organic, and at this point in my life, I feel like I have found my balance. Personally, when I am looking at shampoo ingredients, the key one for me is salicylic acid, it just definitely works for me. I also look for some hydrating ingredients such as Echinacea or Linseed extract (I promise to write more about hydrating products in the near future!).
It is pretty common nowadays that people suggest you go completely organic and natural. I am always hands down very keen on organic food products and only the best to nourish yourself (I am a bit of a health freak and sugar enemy), however completely organic cosmetic products never worked for me.
What shampoos are good for your hair first, my scalp felt like it was on fire and I have to admit at some point I felt like snow white – not attractive! I also have very long hair and I felt I wasn’t able to manage it well and it felt flat – again, not attractive! The problem with going completely organic is that these ingredients might cause even more allergies sometimes because they are not tested enough against atopic dermatitis or eczema. Some plants and their extracts that can be found in shampoo can cause skin irritation.
What I found out when it comes to hair care is that moderation is key. I like when I look at an ingredients list and I can see some natural oils or plant extracts added, but chemical names do not scare me because they do their function, such as preventing bacterial growth or removing dirt and making that lovely foam (and I do love foam when I am washing my hair, it’s so relaxing!!!). I also do try to change my shampoo every three to six months, because I do like a bit of change and science is always moving forward with new discoveries leading to new products!
My personal shopping advice – always be critical of hair care products that have so many labels saying it is the best or has won loads of awards, look at the ingredients list and compare it to another shampoo that is half the price cheaper and you might notice. What shampoos are good for your hair has so many similarities and the main difference is the price (in this case you can save some money for a nice hair mask or conditioner!).
